Consultation on Tipping

May 2016

The Government has published a consultation document seeking views on proposals for the handling of tips and service charges. The broad policy objectives are to make it clear to customers that payments are voluntary, ensure a fair share is received by workers and to increase transparency to workers and consumers in terms of how the payments are treated. Specific proposals include:

  • making it clear on bills that any service charges are voluntary;
  • prohibiting or limiting employers from charging an administrative fee to workers who receive tips, and;
  • placing the voluntary Code of Practice on a statutory basis.

The consultation will close on 27 June 2016.
